Oct 30, 2024When you've come down with a cold or flu you need to eat a certain way to help your body heal. Are you ready to tap into nature's magic potions?
Remember food is your medicine but only if you know the right combinations of foods depending on your symptoms. Otherwise, it could be your 'poison'!
Ready to find out more? Listen up!
Symptom #1
When you've got the sniffles......
Avoid raw, cold foods and dairy.
When we 'catch a cold' it means it's trapped inside our body. So our aim is to warm ourselves up from the inside and drive the cold out!
Raw and cold foods require a lot of energy to be digested therefore weakening our immune system even further. And dairy has a damp, sticky energy which promotes phlegm, so you don't want to be consume it when you've got a cold.
Try to avoid dairy when you have: a stuffy or runny nose, cough, feeling cold, and have a sore throat.
DO eat warm and hot foods such as:
Master soups: that is meat(bone on) or chicken(bone on) and vegetable soups that have been simmering for 2-3 hours.
According to TCM, food has hot, warm, cool, cold and neutral energy. when we have a cold we need warm and energetically potent food.
These soups are called master soups in TCM because the longer they cook, the more potent they become.
Add ginger, turmeric,( for warmth ) to help expel the cold from your system. Garlic, and onions ( for their powerful antiviral, antibacterial properties). Onions also help break up phlegm and suppress coughs. Finally some woody herbs for their warmth, antiviral & antibacterial properties; like thyme, rosemary,( help break up congestion, loosen phlegm in the chest and sinuses ) and sage ( soothes a sore throat) Add all of these wholesome foods to create a powerhouse of a soup and drive your cold out for good!
DRINK
Herbal tea: ginger, spiced tea, yogi tea
Spices: ginger, garlic, rosemary, thyme (remember it loosens phlegm), cinnamon.
You can use these spices in your food, or add them to boiling water to create a herbal tea.
Symptom #2
Bronchitis, or sinusitis
In this case, because there is a build-up of phlegm and mucus ; instead of eating hot foods we need to eat cooling foods, which help break down and disperse the phlegm.
So, Master soups again: meat or chicken and veggies, but instead of warming spices, add cooling.
When I lived in Damascus, I always welcomed the hot mint tea they served in the summer ( most Middle Eastern countries do this). WHY? Because mint is actually cooling in nature.
So add mint to your soups along with some lemon juice to help loosen the phlegm. Mushrooms, celery root, watercress, and radishes also help cool the lungs and help the healing process.
DRINK
Herbal tea: peppermint tea, green tea, black tea ( you've probably guessed by now that these are cooling to our system so beneficial when our lungs are suffering).
Symptom #3
Dry Cough
Poached pears with honey and cinnamon help ease dry cough and moisten the lungs and the throat. Plus, they're delicious!
